Rookie Sam LaCroix takes pot o' gold at Southern Nationals
May 6, 2002

A rainy weekend in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals brought with it a pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow for GoFDR rookie player Sam LaCroix. In only his fourth try at GoFantasyDragRacing, Sam was able to assemble the very best team of the weekend with 714 total points.

In fact, the top-five was almost full of rookie GoFDR players as they claimed the first four positions. Dave Bell finished in the second position with 696 points while Dave Ballinger and Rick Farley tied at 695. Veteran Ken Trichak finished fifth with 677 points.

Last week we had 9 out of our top-10 finishers earning the 50-point bonus for choosing their teams prior to first round qualifying. It was exactly the opposite this week. All top-ten team selections were claimed by those who opted to watch the qualifying rounds before making their choices.

Many players scored big by taking advantage of some unusual ladder placements in Pro Stock. The #1 qualifier, Greg Anderson, only cost $380,000 and the #3 qualifier Allen Johnson was a steal at $250,000. Johnson, who is known for his prowess on the lights, was a cheap and well-placed bet once he was in the show. Meanwhile, Anderson hasn't had much success this year, but is always a threat to pull the proverbial rabbit out of his helmet.

Seven out of our top-10 players took advantage of this opportunity. They placed a winner and a runner-up on their team at a bargain-basement price tag. Those same seven players also had the insight to utilize those savings on big names like Angelle Savoie and Matt Hines - which scored another winner and runner-up for their team. It is hard to lose at our game if you can land four of your eight drivers in the finals!

Our winner this week actually managed to come out on top by picking three winners and one runner-up, thus giving him the advantage he needed. We would like to congratulate Sam LaCroix on his first win here at GoFantasyDragRacing.com in only his fourth attempt.

If you are one of our new players this year and haven't had much success yet, we encourage you to keep trying. It often takes three to six races for newcomers to get a grasp on some of the successful strategies of playing our game. For proof, we need only to look at this week's top-ten results. Not quite a third of the way into the season you will find seven rookies claiming bragging rights over all but three of the veterans!

We had 32 different players this week choosing a grand total of 70 teams. For those of you who are still lurking and watching our game from the sidelines, think about the numbers. You only have to score in the top-25 to at least win your money back and break even. Plus you get the excitement of knowing you have a chance to win the lion's share of $1,000!

We will be joining the NHRA circuit in a weekend off and then we will race for a gruelling three weeks in a row heading into the summer. We hope you will join us then, and don't forget to invite some friends. After all, we can't keep giving away money forever!
