GoFDR veteran Eric Gowdy grips the win at Sears Craftsman Nationals
July 3, 2002

It was a bizarre weekend of qualifying and racing at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis. Several of the sport's top names failed to even qualify while those who did were left trying to get a grip on the slick, overheated asphalt. One guy who did get a grip though, was GoFDR veteran Eric Gowdy.

This was Gowdy's first win since the final GoFDR race of 2001. He has been a major player so far this season as well, having already scored two runner-up finishes. Using his skill and experience, Eric rose just far enough above the competition to take top honors for this event. Eric scored a whopping 692 points, just two points better than second place finisher John Grissom with 690. Grissom also entered a second team which secured the fifth position. Bob Campbell and Ken Trichak scored the third and fourth positions respectively.

This was a bad week for those who opted for the 50-point Pre-Qualifying bonus. Who would have guessed that a guy like Larry Dixon would fail to qualify for a race after the season he has had? This bizarre set of circumstances knocked virtually all of our pre-qualifying entries out of contention. In fact, only one scored in the entire top-ten. Over two-thirds of our early players got caught with one driver who didn't qualify and one-third had two DNQ drivers on their team. Ouch!

However, bad news for the pre-qualifying selections was good news for those who entered teams after qualifying had ended. Many took strategic advantage of the economy "Dream Team" of Scotty Cannon, Ron Capps, and Andrew Cowin, who all qualified in the top two of their classes. Using the money they saved with this combination of drivers, they were able to pick up top dollar names like John Force, Angelle Savoie, or Kenny Bernstein.

It was a challenging weekend of racing to say the least. We here at GoFantasyDragRacing were surprised to see how well many of our players adjusted. Particularly our winner, Eric Gowdy. We send our congratulations out to a veteran racer who has been with us since the beginning. A tip of the hat goes to John Grissom as well, who came up just short of the win himself, in addition to scoring the fifth position. Great racing guys!

Our next race will be the Mile High Nationals in Denver, Colorado on July 18-21. Bikes will run at this event. The deadline for the PreQualifying Selection Bonus will be Friday July 19th at 2:15PM (PT) - 5:15PM (ET). The final deadline for team selection will be Sunday July 21st at 9:00AM (PT) - 12:00 Noon(ET).

Please be sure to come join us then!
