Gary Talbott wins Indy with sound picks and some textbook racing
September 5th, 2001
Very seldom do NHRA events go as you would expect them to go, and the racing this weekend at Indianapolis was about as close as you can get.
Several familiar faces graced victory lane at Indy, including Larry Dixon, Whit Bazemore, and Angelle Savoie. With so many of the usual suspects bringing home the cash on the NHRA circuit, GoFantasyDragRacing.com winner Gary Talbott, and many others, scored record high numbers as well.
Talbott, of McMinnville, TN, tallied up a tremendous 792 points on his winning race team and will take home the first place prize of $300 this week. In addition to his winning team, he played two others, scoring the fourth and 17th place positions. That brings Talbott's winnings this weekend to $385!
Shirley Dionne of Brunswick, Maine took the second position with 734 points ($200), last week's winner John Walker was third with 733 points ($100), and Jay Cason rounded out the top-five with 630 ($50).
The top-four finishers of GoFDR's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals all scored higher than the previous record of 646 points, set by Walker at the last event in Brainerd.
GoFantasyDragRacing.com's Competition Director, Forrest Seek, credits the high scores this weekend to what he called a "fairly textbook race". Many of the event winners and runner-ups looked good going into Monday's eliminations, and were priced very affordable; Mike Coughlin, Shawn Gann, Greg Anderson, and Mark Osborne headed the list of mid-to-low-priced drivers who performed well in qualifying and eliminations at Indy. This allowed GoFDR players who were on the ball to free up a little extra salary cap and buy some big names -- like Dixon, Bazemore, and Savoie!
This was also the first weekend since GoFDR got underway that we had all five classes running: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Trucks and Bikes. There were 80 different drivers for GoFDR team owners to choose from, which also could have been a factor in the weekend record high scores.
We don't expect to see scores this high for some time to come, as all of those factors would have to coincide once again to generate such sky scraping point tallies.
As exciting as all this racing was, unfortunately our Labor Day weekend brought our first GoFDR penalty of the season and it turned out to be a doozy. One of our new players entered four race teams and placed them all in the top-ten -- only to have their credit card declined. Ouch. This hurts us here at GoFDR as well, we don't like to see anyone suffer unexpected stress by playing our game.
If you are a new GoFDR player, please be sure you are using a valid credit card and have all your information correct when you sign up. GoFDR will make every effort possible to notify you in advance if there is an issue with processing your entry fee, but there will be occasions when we just don't have time to contact a player in time for competition.
We have had three different first prize winners in the first three races of the GoFDR inaugural season, and are very pleased with the results so far. The vast majority of players are winning money or at least breaking even, something we are very pleased to announce -- even if our pencil-pushing accountant doesn't agree!
The next GoFDR race is September 13-16th when the NHRA visits Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania for the Keystone Nationals. If you are one of those watching from the grandstands and still not playing, be sure to join in the excitement here at GoFantasyDragRacing.com. With just 37 teams purchased this week and awards posted for the top-25, odds are still expected to be in your favor to win some money -- and have fun doing it!
